IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 8TH GRADE STUDENTS
Registering for High School: 8th grade students will be registering for high school classes on Wednesday, April 4, from 1:30-8:00 pm.  School counselors Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Clarke will assist students in selecting classes, based on recommendations from their 8th grade teachers.  Parents are strongly encouraged to participate in the registration process.  Individual appointments with students and parents will be provided.

News from Principal Arlt
The proverbial homestretch is upon us, seems to happen earlier every year with the weather being the #1 variable.  Of course we try to help our students be successful every day, particularly though, we want to finish on a positive note.  As you might expect, it becomes increasingly difficult as the calendar turns from March to April and then especially from April to May.  We know that you desire a successful conclusion to the school year for your child too so please work with us to help your child be responsible and accountable for their behavior and school work until the last day of school.  Completing homework becomes an increasingly challenging expectation.  Please have those conversations with your child about being prepared every day so that we all can feel good about what we accomplish this school year, to the very last day.
I have addressed a couple times with the student body the guidelines and my expectations concerning the dress code.  This time of year brings out some “summer wear” that might be inappropriate for school.  I expect modesty in appearance and so fully exposed shoulders, tank-tops without an over wear item, or shorts that do not extend past the extended arms and fingertips will always catch our attention and put us in a position to have a “robust” conversation with your child.  Please help us to avoid having these unpleasant conversations by making sure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the school environment, not the park or swimming pool in the summer time.
I have been taking a lot of notes throughout the year on some things that I want to “tweak” for next school year, do away with, or start something new.  One simple thing that I need to start communicating is that we will not allow students to bring or carry trapper keepers to school this fall.  There will be more specific information later about necessary school supplies but this seems to be a common “staple” item that most parents have bought for their kids that just doesn’t work for most kids here at school.  They do not fit in our student’s lockers and they are really not an all-inclusive organizational tool as advertised.  So please keep this in mind. Book bags will be great to carry materials to and from home but trapper keepers will not be allowed. They are a lot like the dresser, closet, or night stand in your child’s bedroom.  While these pieces of furniture are designed to help your child keep their bedroom neat and orderly, I presume that most of you would have to acknowledge that they are not achieving that purpose.
Dr. Conradt addressed in the district newsletter last week the state-wide testing that we will be conducting throughout the district in grades 3-8, 11.  In the middle school, our 5th and 8th grade will be testing April 11, 12, 18, 19, 24, 25.  Our 6th and 7th grade will be testing April 18, 19, 24, 25.  Each of these days, they will have one 45 minute test so it’s really isn’t that intense.  However, these are very high stakes assessments.  We need to do everything that we can to put our kids in a position to be as successful as possible.  Please put your child to bed earlier than normal and feed them a good breakfast.  Avoid making any appointments for them on these days.  Most importantly, encourage them to give their best effort and remind them how smart they are!

School will not be in session on the following dates:
• Friday, April 6
• Monday, April 9
• Tuesday, April 10

Progress reports will be handed out to students on Thursday, April 12th.

School will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 13th, for the Central City Invitational Track Meet.  Hot lunch will not be served.
