DECA Activities

DECA is a co-curricular organization in which students use the information they learn in their business classes to compete against other students in a variety of business events. This year is the chartering year for the Central City High School DECA chapter.  One of the first meetings was used to elect officers into office.  These officers are Jon Carroll-Historian, Amber Rayno-Secretary/News Reporter, Ben Clausen-Vice President, and Andy Gilg-President.
Our chapter has already competed in two such events.  The first competition was the Scottsbluff District Invitational.  We traveled to Scottsbluff the night before with the Hastings DECA Chapter.  After some shopping we went to hotel to eat some pizza and swim.  The next morning we went to our competition.  Everyone who competes takes a written test over the area in which they are competing.  Next students are given a situation that could happen in the business world in their event category.  They are given a paper which explains the situation in detail and objectives they have to cover for the judge.  After ten minutes the students explain to a local business person acting as a judge what they would do in the given situation.  Jon Carroll and Andy Gilg competed in Accounting, while Amber Rayno competed in Business Services Marketing.  At the end of the day Andy Gilg placed second in the written portion of Accounting.
On January 26th we went to compete in the Lincoln District Invitational.  Patrick Jackson competed in Quick Service Restaurant Management, Dylan Moellenberndt competed in Business Services Marketing, and Jon Carroll, Kevin Smith, and Andy Gilg competed in Accounting.  Jon Carroll received third place overall in Accounting while Andy Gilg placed second in the same event.
Central City DECA has also spent time volunteering this year.  During an elementary Christmas concert DECA students helped community members through the school by showing them how to find the concert.  Later, a Christmas caroling meeting was held in which DECA members sang to residents in Long Term Care.
In order to fund the Chapter’s endeavors fundraising has been an ongoing concern.  Recently the chapter sold Sugar Shack Candles.  Students just finished selling DECA Hearts.  For this fundraiser, any high school student could buy a heart for fifty cents and write a message on it for another student.  These hearts were then displayed and people with their names on a heart could pay twenty-five cents in order to read the message and keep the hearts.  The funds from this project will be used for DECA Members to go to State DECA in March.
Students that will attend the State Competition in Lincoln, NE March 18-20 are Lindsey Anderson, Andy Gilg, and Patrick Jackson.
