2015 International DECA Competition
by Amber Erickson
On April 24-29 Amber Erickson, Jill Gathje, and the DECA advisor, Mrs. McPhillips, had the privilege of getting to attend and compete at DECA’s International Career Development Conference/Competition in Orlando, Florida. Jill and Amber qualified to attend this international competition because they placed in the top three in their event at the state DECA competition in March. They both competed in the Accounting Applications event. While in Orlando the girls competed by taking a 100 question written test and doing two role plays where they were given a business scenario and had to act out the proper way of handling the situation with a judge. They also attended an opening session, a mini-awards session, and a grand awards session. Besides competing and attending these sessions the girls were kept very busy with many activities. They got to take part in a 5k run/walk for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and they also got to go to Disney World, Hollywood Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Universal Studios.
Amber ended up placing in the top 20% in her event. Since there were around 150 students who qualified to compete in this event from across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Korea, China, Guam, and Puerto Rico, this was a great accomplishment. It means she placed in around the top 30 students who competed in the event!
Amber and Jill had a great time in Orlando gathering more information about accounting and business, meeting new people, and putting their knowledge and skills that they have learned in their classes to use. Both Amber and Jill did a wonderful job with competition. They gained great experiences through the International DECA Conference/Competition, and they both represented Central City very well!
